Born: March 18, 1578 in Frankfurt am Main Died December 11, 1610. Roman German painter. Trained under Frankfurt painter P. Uchenbach. In 1598, he worked under H. Rottenhammer in Venice. He worked in Rome from 1600 until his death. Influenced by Caravaggio, Carracci, and Lucas van Valkenborch, he developed his own style of painting, and in his small works of mythological and religious subjects, he painted ideal landscapes rich in light and shade, harmonizing the romantic vision of the north with Italian clarity, and had a great influence on Rubens, Rembrandt, Lorrain, and others. His works include "The Baptism of Christ" (c. 1600, National Gallery, London) and "The Flight into Egypt" (09, Alte Pinakothek, Munich).
