Lion Feuchtwanger

German author. The eldest son of a Jewish businessman in Munich, he quickly established himself as a theater critic. His historical novel Jew Sieß (1925) caused a great sensation. His novel Success (1930), which deals with the 1920s, criticizes the conservative mentality of Bavaria. He went into exile in 1933. He lived first in the south of France and later in America, where he became active in anti-fascist activities. His later novel Goya (1951) is also a major work that tackles the issues of the time. His works are praised for combining seriousness with entertainment, and he has a large readership outside of Germany, including in the United States and the former Soviet Union.

ドイツの作家。ミュンヘンのユダヤ系企業家の長男だが、早くから劇評などで自立。歴史小説『ユダヤ人ジュース』（1925）が大反響をよぶ。1920年代を扱う『成功』（1930）ではバイエルンの保守的精神状況を批判。1933年亡命。最初は南フランス、のちにアメリカに住み、盛んな反ファシズム活動を展開。晩年の小説『ゴヤ』（1951）も時代の問題と取り組んだ大作である。真剣さと娯楽性を兼備すると評価され、アメリカ、旧ソ連などドイツ国外に読者が多い。
