German author. The eldest son of a Jewish businessman in Munich, he quickly established himself as a theater critic. His historical novel Jew Sieß (1925) caused a great sensation. His novel Success (1930), which deals with the 1920s, criticizes the conservative mentality of Bavaria. He went into exile in 1933. He lived first in the south of France and later in America, where he became active in anti-fascist activities. His later novel Goya (1951) is also a major work that tackles the issues of the time. His works are praised for combining seriousness with entertainment, and he has a large readership outside of Germany, including in the United States and the former Soviet Union.
