He was promoted from a lawyer to a military officer and became the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Caracalla. During the war with Parthia, he incited his officers to assassinate the emperor, and three days later, he became the first emperor in history to be crowned without first having been a senator, and made peace with Parthia. He was abandoned by his subordinates and defeated and killed by the rise of Elagapalus.
