Vasari's highly praised Sagra, which depicted the dedication of the Santa Maria del Carmine Church in Florence, was destroyed in the 16th century, but his murals in the Brancacci Chapel in the same church, which he created in collaboration with Masolino da Panicale, are a monument to the birth of Italian Renaissance painting. Masaccio was responsible for two scenes, including Expulsion from Paradise, The Tribute Money, and Peter the Baptist, among others. In Expulsion from Paradise, he used strong light and dark effects to highlight the figures of Adam and Eve weeping over the sins they had committed, with a realism that surpasses Michelangelo's work on the same subject (Sistine Chapel) about a century later. …
