A cube-shaped temple in Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula. For Islam, it is the holiest structure on earth, and Muslims are obligated to pray facing the Kaaba five times a day and make a pilgrimage to it at least once in their lifetime. The Kaaba existed before the rise of Islam, and legend has it that it was built by Abraham, who is mentioned in the Old Testament. The Prophet Muhammad (Mahomet) preached that his faith was the same as that of Abraham, and considered the Kaaba sacred. It is currently located in the center of the courtyard of the huge Holy (Haram) Mosque, and is made of stone and is about 12 meters long, 10 meters deep, and 15 meters high, covered with a single piece of cloth. A sacred black stone is set into one corner of the building, and pilgrims kiss it. [Akira Goto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
