Kaaba - Ka'ba (English spelling)

A cube-shaped temple in Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula. For Islam, it is the holiest structure on earth, and Muslims are obligated to pray facing the Kaaba five times a day and make a pilgrimage to it at least once in their lifetime. The Kaaba existed before the rise of Islam, and legend has it that it was built by Abraham, who is mentioned in the Old Testament. The Prophet Muhammad (Mahomet) preached that his faith was the same as that of Abraham, and considered the Kaaba sacred. It is currently located in the center of the courtyard of the huge Holy (Haram) Mosque, and is made of stone and is about 12 meters long, 10 meters deep, and 15 meters high, covered with a single piece of cloth. A sacred black stone is set into one corner of the building, and pilgrims kiss it.

アラビア半島のメッカにある立方体の神殿。イスラム教にとっては地上でのもっとも神聖な建造物で、イスラム教徒は、毎日5回のカーバに向かっての礼拝と、一生に最低一度のカーバへの巡礼が義務づけられている。イスラム教勃興(ぼっこう)以前からカーバは存在し、伝説では、『旧約聖書』に書かれているアブラハムが建立したことになっている。預言者ムハンマド（マホメット）は、自らの信仰をアブラハムのそれと同じであると説いて、カーバを神聖視した。現在は巨大な聖（ハラム）モスクの中庭の中央にあり、長さ約12メートル、奥行約10メートル、高さ約15メートルの石造りで1枚の布に覆われている。建物の一隅に聖なる黒石がはめ込まれ、巡礼者はそれに接吻(せっぷん)する。
