An active volcano located 12km southeast of Naples in southern Italy. It is 1281m above sea level. It is a double volcano with a central crater about 500m in diameter. About 12km to the southeast are the ruins of Pompeii, which were buried by a major explosion in 79. Since then, there have been more than 50 eruptions, and in 1845 the world's first volcanic observatory was built. In 1880, a funicular railway, famous as Funiculi Funicula, was opened from an altitude of 800m to the crater rim (1200m), but it was destroyed in an eruption accompanied by lava flow in 1944, and now a chairlift is in operation.
