A perennial saprophytic plant of the family Pontederiaceae. It is widely distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia. It grows in groups of several in the dark under forests of mountainous areas. It is fleshy, and the entire plant is white except for the roots, but turns black when it dries. The stem is 10-20 cm tall and does not branch. The leaves are scaly and alternate. In summer, a single downward-facing flower blooms at the end of the stem. There are 1-3 sepals, 3-5 petals, 10 stamens, and hairy filaments. The fruit is a spherical white berry. It is named after the way the leaves are attached like dragon scales and the white body, and is also called ghost mushroom.
