Chikuma River

Japanese: 筑摩川 - ちくまがわ

The title of a Nagauta song. It was first performed in October 1879 at the Shintomiza Theater in Tokyo as "Kagamiyama Nishiki no Momijiba." The lyrics were by Kawatake Mokuami, and the music was by Kineya Shojiro III. It was used in the scene at the Chikuma River where Torii Matasuke tries to assassinate Lord Yoshinobu during the Kaga Disturbance. It is a valiant song unique to Osatsuma, depicting the rapids of the Chikuma River and the way in which people weather them. It is said to be a representative song of Osatsuma.

長唄の曲名。 1879年 10月東京新富座『鏡山錦もみじ葉』 (かがみやまにしきのもみじば) で初演。作詞河竹黙阿弥，作曲3世杵屋正次郎。加賀騒動で鳥居又助が大領義信公を暗殺しようとする筑摩川の場面に用いた。筑摩川の激流とそれを乗切るありさまを描写した大薩摩 (おおざつま) 特有の豪壮な曲。大薩摩の代表曲といわれる。
