When a molecule contains highly reactive functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, or amino groups, these groups are temporarily protected from chemical changes under reaction conditions so that a reaction can be carried out without affecting them. The protected functional groups are called protecting groups. After a reaction, protected functional groups may be returned to their original form, or they may be used in the next reaction as is.
