The Soviet theory of montage was later politically criticized through the "socialist realism" of the 1930s, and when the documentary touch of Italian "neorealism" began to transform world cinema just after World War II, it was rejected by the "one scene, one cut" theory of French film theorist André Bazin (1918-58), who argued that the basis of "direction (mise-en-scène)" in film is not "cutting (découpage)" but "one scene, one cut (plan-séquence)" which aims to "respect the continuity of dramatic space". However, it contributed greatly to the artistic expression of film, and occupies an important position in the "history" of film theory. …
