A class of warriors who could ride horses. After the Muromachi period, the use of spears led to mass infantry battles, and ordinary soldiers were called kachi (foot soldiers). Only samurai commanders and their guards were allowed to ride horses. They were called kajo-shu (horseback riders) and were allowed to participate in battles on horseback.
