After the Genna and Kan'ei periods (1615-44), town houses were built one after another within the mansions of lower-ranking shogunate vassals that had received official compensation, and around 1696 (Genroku 9), each of these came under the control of the town magistrate. These include Takemachi, where bamboo and wood merchants gathered; Kanesukemachi, which was the land received by the vassal Makino Kanesuke; Harukimachi, where the lodging house of Ise oshi (master) Haruki Tayu was located; and Kikusakamachi, originally a chrysanthemum field.
