Road

Japanese:
Road

A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. He was a member of the Yasomura clan, or, according to one theory, the Imbe or Imube clan. He was commonly known as Yojiemon. His pen name was also Rotsu or Ryotsu. There are three theories about his birthplace: Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture), Kyoto, and Tsukushi Province (Fukuoka Prefecture). He lived a wandering life as a beggar, and met Basho in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) around 1685 (Jokyo 2). After that, he often accompanied Basho, including going all the way to Tsuruga to welcome him back from his pilgrimage to write "Oku no Hosomichi," and was recognized for his haiku ability. However, he had a bad reputation among his fellow students due to various immoral actions, and was even excommunicated by Basho at one point. However, in his final years, Basho was able to overcome his anger, and after his teacher's death, he compiled the "Basho's Gyojyo-ki" as a memorial to show his gratitude to his teacher. His style of composition is simple, and his poems are based on real life, and show excellent recitation. He also edited and wrote "Haiku Kanjincho".
