…A large saprophytic orchid that lives symbiotically with armillaria mushrooms (illustration). The red fruits that decorate low mountains in autumn are reminiscent of akebia, hence the Japanese name. It has a thick, long rhizome. The stem is thick and upright, brown and lacking chloroplasts, 50-100cm tall, with degenerate scale leaves here and there. From June to August, the branched inflorescence produces numerous flowers. The flowers are yellowish brown and about 1.5-2cm in diameter. The perianth does not open much. The lip is somewhat fleshy and has a strong yellowish tint. The fruit is fleshy, red, and droops. It does not dehisce even when ripe. …
