A town in Sashima County, in the southwestern tip of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a town on June 1, 1996 from Goka Village. It is located on the south bank of the midstream Tone River, facing Chiba Prefecture across the Edo River to the east and Saitama Prefecture across the Gongendo River to the west. The town used to be plagued by floods, but this was resolved with the completion of river improvement work in 1965. Rice is the main crop, and greenhouse horticulture is also practiced. Since the 1960s, the construction of industrial parks and residential development has progressed. Because it is separated by the Tone River, economic activity tends to be more dependent on Saitama Prefecture than on the prefecture itself. The town suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 23.11 km2 . 9,410 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
