A marine fish of the family Cnididae in the order Perciformes. It is found throughout Japan, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and elsewhere, and is often found in coastal rocks and inland bays where seaweed is lush. It grows to 20cm in length. It has many local names, such as kasori in Osaka and Mie, kasoriuo in Lake Hamana, kasoriunagi in Wakayama, and naginata in Mito, all of which are due to the fact that its body is long and thin and flat, and resembles the blade of a razor. It is also called aburame in Kagoshima, nabekowashi in Hiroshima, catfish in Kochi, and kaccho in Shimonoseki. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
