Its area is 351,300 km2 and its population is 1,042,000 (1993). Its capital is Ulan-Ude. It is located in southern Siberia, occupying the eastern and southern parts of Lake Baikal, and bordering Irkutsk Oblast and the Republic of Tuva to the west and Mongolia to the south. It has a mountainous topography, with the lowest point of the country, the shores of Lake Baikal, only 455 meters above sea level.
