A general term for Japanese tea ware fired in kilns other than Seto kilns (→ Seto ware). In the Edo period, tea masters considered Seto to be the main kiln, so all other kilns were called this term, but Kyo-yaki was sometimes considered an exception and not included in the national wares. Currently, it is used to refer to tea ware made in Japan in contrast to Chinese tea ware (Karamono) and Korean tea ware (Koryomono).
