…He was born in Khoja Ilgar near Shahri Sabz as a member of the Barlas tribe, one of the Turkified and Islamized Mongol tribes (Chagatai Turks). During his youth as a leader of a band of bandits, he sustained permanent injuries to his right hand and right leg, which led to his enemies calling him Timur-i-lang (Persian for crippled Timur), which was introduced to Europe and gave rise to the names Tamerlane and Tamburlaine.
