Dnepropetrovsk (English spelling) Dnepropetrovsk

Japanese: ドニエプロペトロフスク - どにえぷろぺとろふすく(英語表記)Днепропетровск/Dnepropetrovsk
Dnepropetrovsk (English spelling) Dnepropetrovsk

The capital of Dniepropetrovsk Oblast in Ukraine, and one of Ukraine's leading heavy industrial cities. Formerly known as Ekaterinoslav (until 1796, 1802-1926) and Novorossiysk (1796-1802). The former was named after Empress Catherine the Great. The current name commemorates politician G. I. Petrovsky (1878-1958). Population 1,065,000 (2001). Founded in 1783 as a fortress on a hill overlooking the Dnieper River, the city center is still located here. Including the lowlands on the left bank, the city area stretches 15 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide along the river. There is a river port on the right bank, and heavy industry areas along the river. Industries such as steelmaking, machine assembly, and chemicals have developed, and there are large factories such as the Petrovsky Steel Works, the Comintern Steel Works, and the Dnepropetrovsk Turbine Plant, as well as factories producing steelmaking machinery, combine harvesters, tires, coke, and large press machines. There is also a comprehensive university, and many research and educational facilities for industrial technology. Historical buildings that remain include the Potemkin Palace (currently used as a student hall) built at the end of the 18th century and Preobrazhensky Cathedral. A subway began operating in 1983-84.
