Quilombo - Quilombo (English spelling)

Japanese: キロンボ - きろんぼ(英語表記)Quilombo
Quilombo - Quilombo (English spelling)
A society of fugitive slaves that continued to threaten white society in colonial Brazil. After 1570, as the importation of black slaves increased, it spread to the Bahia and Pernambuco regions in northern Brazil, and in the 18th century spread to the São Paulo and Minas Gerais regions, and existed throughout Brazil until the emancipation of slaves in 1888. Until the beginning of the 17th century, quilombos were called mocambos. Quilombos were closed villages consisting of 50 to several thousand houses in dense jungles and remote mountain areas, fortified with fences and moats. While engaging in farming, hunting, and fishing, they also raided white settlements and plantations to obtain weapons, clothing, tools, and women.
