Thermopylai

…480 BC, a famous battle in the Second Persian War. The Greek allied forces stationed their navy at Artemisium and their ground forces at the narrow pass Thermopylae as their first line of defense against the Persian army, which was advancing south through northern Greece. The Spartan allied forces under Leonidas, who was defending Thermopylae, worked well with their navy to thwart the advance of Xerxes I, but the Persian army finally launched an offensive, resulting in a three-day deadly battle between them.
