Leclerc (English spelling)

French soldier.
Former Commander-in-Chief of the North African Expeditionary Force.
Born in the Somme department.
Real name: Jacques Philippe de Hauteclocque.
He was captured by the German army in the early days of World War II, but escaped and joined the Free French Movement in London, operating under a different name. He achieved outstanding military success against the Italian army in North Africa, and participated in the Normandy landings in 1944, leading the French 2nd Armoured Division. In August of the same year, he led the vanguard of the liberation of Paris, becoming a national hero, liberating Strasbourg, and advancing as far as Belstesgarden in 1945. He later signed the Japanese surrender document to France as commander-in-chief of the Indochina Expeditionary Force. In 1946 he became the commander-in-chief of the North African Expeditionary Force, but died in a plane crash in Algeria in 1947. He was awarded the rank of marshal in 1952.

第二次世界大戦初期にドイツ軍の捕虜となるが脱走、ロンドンの自由フランス運動に参加し、別名にて活動する。北アフリカでイタリア軍を相手として目覚しい戦功を収め、フランス軍第二機甲師団を率いて、’44年ノルマンディー上陸作戦に参加。同年8月パリ解放の先陣を務め国民的英雄となり、ストラスブールを解放、’45年ベルステスガーデンまで進出。のちインドシナ派遣軍総司令官として日本軍の対仏降伏文書に調印。’46年北アフリカ派遣軍の総監になるが、’47年アルジェリアで飛行機事故死。’52年元帥授与。
