A noble family that ruled Verona, Italy, from 1277 to 1387. The origins of the family are unknown. They settled in the city in the 11th century, and held fiefs in rural areas in the 12th century. In the first half of the 13th century, Mastino I was appointed to important positions in the city, such as Podestà and Capitano. After the death of Ezzelino da Romano, whom he supported, they opposed the Conti faction, which had returned to the city. In 1277, the citizens granted Alberto of the Della Scala family the governing powers (signore), including the right to change city ordinances, dispose of city property, and judicial powers.
