He was an Indian Vedanta philosopher and the founder of the Madhava school, a branch of Hindu Vaishnavaism. He was from the Kannada region of southern India. His works include commentaries on the Brahma Sutra, the religious poem Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. He criticized the monism of the Shankara school, arguing that Brahman, the individual self, and matter are real and distinct entities, and preached a different theory. He also identified Brahman with the god Vishnu, based the faith in Vishnu on Vedanta philosophy, and preached liberation through direct realization of God.
