New Selection of Rōeishu - Shinsenrōeishu

Japanese:
New Selection of Rōeishu - Shinsenrōeishu

A collection of songs from the late Heian period. Two volumes. Compiled by Fujiwara no Mototoshi. It was probably completed sometime between 1122 (Hōan 3) and 1133 (Chōshō 2). Based primarily on anthologies of Chinese poetry and prose such as "Senzaikaku" and "Honchō Monzui," and imperial anthologies such as "Shūi Wakashu" and "Goshūi Wakashu," it contains 543 beautiful phrases in poetry and prose suitable for recitation, and 203 waka poems, for a total of 746 poems. As it is also called "Shinsen Wakan Roeishu," it is a sequel to Fujiwara no Kinto's "Wakan Roeishu," and follows the original in terms of format, subdivision, and volume, lacking originality and not having much influence on later generations, but in contrast to the decrease in the number of collected verses by Chinese poets, the number of verses by Japanese poets has increased significantly, and the included poems tend to value the gentle and elegant style of Ichijo Asakaze, reflecting the tastes of the time. It is thought to have been established as part of the poetry ruiju movement led by Fujiwara no Tadamichi, as represented by "Twenty Volumes of Ruiju Utaawase."
