Also known as kin selection. This refers to the natural selection that operates when genetic traits shared by related individuals have some effect on the survival and reproduction of those individuals. The kin selection theory, which states that altruistic behavior that is detrimental to an individual but benefits related individuals can evolve through kin selection, was proposed by J. Maynard Smith based on the concept of inclusive fitness introduced by W.D. Hamilton. It is a central concept in sociobiology because it can explain many phenomena, including parenting behavior by workers in social insects, as well as infanticide, helpers, and extramarital copulation.
