Also known as kin selection. This refers to the natural selection that operates when genetic traits shared by related individuals have some effect on the survival and reproduction of those individuals. The kin selection theory, which states that altruistic behavior that is detrimental to an individual but benefits related individuals can evolve through kin selection, was proposed by J. Maynard Smith based on the concept of inclusive fitness introduced by W.D. Hamilton. It is a central concept in sociobiology because it can explain many phenomena, including parenting behavior by workers in social insects, as well as infanticide, helpers, and extramarital copulation. 血縁選択とも。血縁個体の共有する遺伝的形質が血縁個体間の生存・繁殖に何らかの影響を及ぼすときに,そこに働く自然淘汰をいう。個体にとっては不利益だが血縁個体に利益をもたらす利他的行動は血縁淘汰によって進化しうるとする血縁淘汰説は,W.D.ハミルトンが導入した包括適応度の概念を基に,J.メイナード・スミスが提唱。社会性昆虫のワーカーによる養育行動のほか,子殺しやヘルパー,婚外交尾など多くの現象を説明できるため,社会生物学の中心的概念となっている。
