Aichi Prefecture's western city, located on the Ise Bay coast of the Nobi Plain. Incorporated as a city in 1889, it is the prefectural capital. In 1956, it became a government-designated city. It consists of 16 wards: Chikusa, Higashi, Kita, Nishi, Nakamura, Naka, Showa, Mizuho, Atsuta, Nakagawa, Minato, Minami, Moriyama, Midori, Meito, and Tenpaku. During the Edo period, the city center developed as a castle town for the Owari Domain, one of the three great feudal domains. Since the Meiji period, it has developed as the political, economic, and cultural center of the Tokai region, and since it is located halfway between Tokyo and Osaka, it has come to be called Chukyo. Although one-quarter of the city area was damaged during World War II, it has been remarkably rebuilt through bold urban planning, such as the construction of 100m roads, Wakamiya Odori running east-west and Hisaya Odori running north-south, centered around the former Yabacho in Naka Ward, and the relocation of the cemetery in the city center to Peace Park in Chikusa Ward. A key point for land and water transport, it is served by the Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Chuo Main Line, Kansai Main Line, Nagoya Railroad, Kintetsu Railway, and the city subway, and many other major roads such as the Tomei Expressway and Nagoya Second Ring Road are also located here. Nagoya Port was formerly called Atsuta Port, and after it was designated an open port in 1907, it expanded. Heavy chemical industries have grown rapidly in the coastal industrial area since the 1960s, and it has now developed into a major trading port on a par with Kobe and Yokohama. It is the center of the Chukyo Industrial Zone, and with a turnover of 3,454 billion yen (2003), it is the second largest in the prefecture after Toyota City. Industries such as machinery, transportation machinery, publishing and printing are thriving. The government district is located around Nagoya Castle, and banks, companies, and movie theaters are located in Hirokoji, while department stores and shops are concentrated around Sakaemachi intersection. There are Osu Kannon, Higashiyama Park, Atsuta Shrine, Tsuruma Park, Nagoya Port Aquarium, Nagoya University, and Nanzan University. Nagoya Airport (currently the Prefectural Nagoya Airport) is located in Toyoyama Town, which borders the city to the north. In 2002, the Fujimae Tidal Flats were registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. 326.45 km2 . 2,263,894 people (2010). → Related topics Aichi Prefecture | Kiyosu Castle | Nagoya Station | Nagoya Institute of Technology | Nagoya University | Midland Square Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
