A former town in Minamimuro District, southern Mie Prefecture. Occupying mountainous land on the left bank of the Kumano River and its tributary, the Kitayama River, the town is involved in agriculture and forestry, and produces rice, wild vegetables, and other crops. The Kishu Mine, which produced copper and sulfide ores, closed in 1978. The town is also home to Dorokyo Gorge. It was incorporated into Kumano City in November 2005. Area: 113.67 km2 .
