Kiransou - Kiransou

A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae), commonly found on hills and foothills. The stems grow in all directions, crawl along the ground, and reach a length of 5-15 cm, but do not send out roots from the nodes. The leaves are oblong, wedge-shaped, and tapered at the base, 1.5-3 cm long. Both the stems and leaves are generally curly and hairy. The basal leaves spread out in all directions to cover the ground (rosette-like), so it is also known as Jigoku no Kama no Futa. The flowers appear in the leaf axils in March to May, and are deep purple, tubular, about 1 cm long, with a large lower lip that opens into three lobes, and a very short upper lip. They are distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and China. There are about 50 species in the genus Acanthus, distributed in Asia, Africa, and Europe, and 12 species, such as Juninhitoe and Nishikigoromo, are found in Japan.

シソ科（APG分類：シソ科）の多年草で、丘陵や山麓(さんろく)に多くみられる。茎は四方に出て地表をはい、長さ5～15センチメートルになるが、節から根を出すことがない。葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で、くさび形に基部が細くなり、長さ1.5～3センチメートル。茎、葉とも全体に縮れ毛が多い。根出葉が四方に広がって地表を覆う（ロゼット状）ので、別名ジゴクノカマノフタともいう。花は3～5月ごろ葉腋(ようえき)に数個ずつつき、濃紫色で1センチメートルくらいの筒があり、下唇は大きく、3裂して開出し、上唇はごく短い。本州、四国、九州、朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。キランソウ属は約50種あり、アジア、アフリカ、ヨーロッパに分布し、日本にはジュウニヒトエ、ニシキゴロモなど12種がある。
