Coronal bone

Japanese: 冠状骨 - かんじょうこつ
Coronal bone

…In animals of the bony or higher order, at the beginning of individual development, they have a cartilaginous jawbone similar to that of cartilaginous fish, but eventually the rear part of the quadrate cartilage of the palate ossifies to become a bone called the quadrate bone, and other bones such as the premaxilla, maxilla, palatine, and pterygoid develop secondarily to form the skeleton of the upper jaw. In the lower jaw, only the rear end of the mandibular cartilage ossifies to become an articular bone, but the rest of the jaw shrinks, and instead several types of bones such as the dentary and coronal bone develop secondarily and join together to form the skeleton of the lower jaw. Bones that first develop as cartilage and then ossify are called cartilaginous bones or replacement bones, while bones that appear secondarily without passing through cartilage are called dermal or membranous bones because they form directly in the dermis. …
