Guillain-Barre syndrome

A disease that begins 1-2 weeks after cold symptoms or diarrhea, with pain and numbness in the hands and feet, followed by weakness in the legs, muscle weakness, and sensory abnormalities, which can make walking difficult. Peripheral facial nerve paralysis also occurs, and other symptoms include seeing two objects and choking, making it difficult to eat. The cause is unknown. In most cases, patients recover without any aftereffects within about six months of onset. In addition to symptomatic treatment, functional training is performed to restore muscle strength. In severe cases where breathing difficulties and swallowing disorders occur, artificial respirators and tube feeding are required. Recently, plasma exchange has been considered effective.

風邪症状や下痢の１〜２週間後，手足の疼痛やしびれにはじまり，下肢の脱力，筋力の低下，知覚異常が現れ，歩行が困難になることもある疾患。末梢の顔面神経麻痺も起こり，物が二つに見えたり，むせて食事がしにくくなるなどの症状もみられる。原因は不明。ほとんどの場合，発病後半年くらいで後遺症なく回復する。対症療法のほか，筋力の回復のための機能訓練を行う。呼吸困難や嚥下(えんげ)障害の起こる重症例では，人工呼吸器や経管栄養などが必要。最近では血漿(けっしょう)交換が有効とされる。
