… However, at the end of the 14th century, with the rise of national consciousness, English regained its status as the national language, and several Latin-English dictionaries appeared during the 15th century. The English-Latin dictionary, “A Treasury for Beginners,” said to have been compiled by Galfridus Grammaticus (Geoffrey the Grammarian, date of birth and death unknown), a Dominican monk active around 1440, featured about 12,000 English words, mainly nouns and verbs, and added their Latin equivalents, which gained a good reputation. In 1499, it was published as the first printed dictionary in England. Incidentally, the “Italian-German Vocabulary,” published in Venice in 1477, was the first printed bilingual dictionary of modern languages, and the “German Vocabulary,” published in Nuremberg in 1481, included about 10,000 headwords. …

…　けれども14世紀末になると，国家意識の高揚とともに英語が国語としての地位を回復し，15世紀の間に数種の羅英辞典が現れた。1440年ころに活躍したドミニコ会士ガルフリドゥスGalfridus Grammaticus(ジョフリーGeoffrey the Grammarian，生没年不詳)の編と伝えられる英羅辞典《初学者用学習宝庫》は，名詞･動詞を主として約1万2000の英単語を取り上げ，これにラテン語の対応語を加えたもので好評を得，99年にはイギリスで最初の印刷本辞書として刊行された。ちなみに，1477年ベネチアで出版された《伊独語彙（ごい）集》は最初に印刷された近代語2ヵ国語辞典であり，また81年にニュルンベルク出版の《ドイツ語彙集》には約1万語の見出し語が収録されている。…
