The English-Latin dictionary, “A Treasury for Beginners,” said to have been compiled by Galfridus Grammaticus (Geoffrey the Grammarian, date of birth and death unknown), a Dominican monk active around 1440, featured about 12,000 English words, mainly nouns and verbs, and added their Latin equivalents, which gained a good reputation. In 1499, it was published as the first printed dictionary in England.
