… However, at the end of the 14th century, with the rise of national consciousness, English regained its status as the national language, and several Latin-English dictionaries appeared during the 15th century. The English-Latin dictionary, “A Treasury for Beginners,” said to have been compiled by Galfridus Grammaticus (Geoffrey the Grammarian, date of birth and death unknown), a Dominican monk active around 1440, featured about 12,000 English words, mainly nouns and verbs, and added their Latin equivalents, which gained a good reputation. In 1499, it was published as the first printed dictionary in England. Incidentally, the “Italian-German Vocabulary,” published in Venice in 1477, was the first printed bilingual dictionary of modern languages, and the “German Vocabulary,” published in Nuremberg in 1481, included about 10,000 headwords. …
