Hekabe - Hekabe (English spelling)

Hekabe - Hekabe (English spelling)

A tragedy by the ancient Greek tragedian Euripides. The date of performance is unknown, but perhaps around 424 BC.

After the fall of Troy, Hecuba, the wife of Trojan King Priam, is taken by the Greek general Odysseus as a war trophy and travels to Greece with other Trojan women. On the way, when they stop in Thrace, the Greek army sacrifices her daughter Polyxena to appease the spirit of Achilles. In addition to this misfortune, the death of her youngest son Polydorus, whom she had secretly let escape when Troy fell, plunges her into the depths of despair. Learning that Polydorus' death was the work of Polymestor, the exiled Thracian king, who was blinded by the gold of Polymestor, Hecuba enlists the help of her maids to blind Polymestor and kill his two children, thus succeeding in avenging her son's death.

At first glance, the play seems to simply link together two incidents, but both events took place after the fall of Troy, and it spares no time in telling the horrors of war, especially the suffering of women and children.
