Criticized immoral literary works that tended to corrupt morals, and launched fierce attacks on writers of popular erotic literature (pornography). He worked for the Young Men's Christian Association in New York City from around 1872, and worked hard outside the legislature to get the Comstock Act of 1873 passed.
