Native to Central America, this fern is now commonly cultivated as a greenhouse plant (illustration). Its English name comes from the fact that the lowest pinna of its unipinnate leaves becomes a sporophyll and assumes a flowering position. The rhizome is short, creeping, hairy and scaleless. The leaves have long petioles and the pinnae are ovate with a sharp tip and a broad wedge-shaped base. The sporangia are attached to the lowest pinna, but these pinnae have long stalks and do not extend beyond what could be called a leaf surface, with large sporangia attached in two rows to the small lobes. It is easy to grow in a pot, making it a valuable ornamental plant for greenhouses. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
