1864‐1914 Archduke of Austria (1896-1914). Nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph I. As heir to the throne, he was concerned about the decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and envisioned a federal state with the inclusion of the South Slavic peoples. With the support of the Serbian youth and the military, he reformed the army in 1913. However, he incurred the wrath of Serbian nationalists, and was assassinated along with his wife on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia, which the country had annexed in 1908. This led to the outbreak of World War I. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
