A region in northern Poland, eastern Baltic coast, roughly corresponding to Gdansk Voivodeship. Inhabited by descendants of the ancient Pomeranians who speak the Kashubian dialect of Polish. The region west of the mouth of the Vistula River has many moraine hills and glacial lakes, and the terrain is generally barren, with low hills and lowlands. The main cities are Kartzy and Kościerzyna. The Kashubian region came under the control of the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century, but was restored to Polish territory in the Treaty of Toruń in 1466.
