The name of the region in the northern part of Australia's Northern Territory, referring to the eastern half of the peninsula between the Timor Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. It has an area of approximately 94,000 km2 and a population of 100,000 (1985). Most of it is reserved for the indigenous people of Arnhem Land. At the northeastern end is the bauxite mining district of Gove (population 3,553). In principle, the consent of the indigenous people is required for the development of mineral resources in indigenous areas. The name of the region comes from the name of a Dutch ship that arrived in 1623. [Taniuchi Tatsu] [art] Arnhem Land has many Aboriginal rock and bark paintings, and bark paintings continue to be made today. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
