Kano Soshu

Japanese: 狩野宗秀 - かのうそうしゅう

1551/52－1601/02 A painter from the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Born in Tenbun 20/21. Second son of Kano Shōei. Supported his elder brother Eitoku, and after his death assisted his brother's son Mitsunobu. In 1590, he painted the partitions of the Imperial Palace together with his brother, and in 1601, he was involved in the production of partitions of the new palace of the Katsura Imperial Family. Following Eitoku's style, he painted in a bold and bold style. His representative works include the "Four Seasons of Flowers and Birds" folding screen and the "Eden of Ippen Shonin" picture scroll. Died November 1603/1604. Age 51/52. His name was Hidenobu.

天文(てんぶん)20／21年生まれ。狩野松栄の次男。兄永徳をささえ,没後は兄の子光信を補佐した。天正(てんしょう)18年(1590)兄とともに御所の障壁画をえがき,慶長4年桂宮家新殿の障壁画制作にたずさわる。永徳の様式をついで豪放であらあらしい作風の作品をえがいた。代表作に「四季花鳥図屏風」,「一遍上人絵伝」絵巻など。慶長6／7年11月死去。51／52歳。名は秀信。
