Gabardine

Also known as gabardine for short, it was originally a fabric made with wool for the warp and cotton for the weft, woven in a tight twill weave with high ridges. Nowadays, it is woven using a variety of fibers, including pure wool, pure cotton, and synthetic fibers. The name is said to have originated from the shabby, long overcoats worn by Jews in the Middle Ages. It is primarily made of a twill weave of 100% wool and 100% cotton, with a high warp density and a firm, sturdy texture. It is mainly used after being resin-treated for women's and children's clothing, and after being waterproofed for raincoats and duster coats.

Among cotton gabardine, the one known as Burberry, which is made of fine yarn and has a fine twill weave, is a product of the British company Burberry and is its registered trademark, but it has now become a general term referring to thin cotton and silk gabardine.

ギャバとも略してよばれ、もとは経糸(たていと)に毛、緯糸(よこいと)に綿を使い、綾(あや)組織に緻密(ちみつ)に織り、畝(うね)を高くした織物。現在では純毛、純綿、化合繊などいろいろな繊維を使って織られている。この名称は、中世にユダヤ人が着ていた粗末な丈の長いオーバーをさしたことに由来するという。組織は主として、、の綾組織からなり、経糸の密度がこんだもので、堅くしっかりした地合いが特徴である。おもに樹脂加工して、婦人・子供服地や、防水加工を施してレインコート、ダスターコート地に使用されている。

　綿ギャバジンのうち、細番手で細かい綾目を出したバーバリーといわれているものは、イギリスのバーバリー社の製品で、その登録商標でもあるが、いまでは薄地の綿・絹ギャバジンをさす一般的名称ともなっている。
