This is an event where boys and girls who have just turned 13 years old visit Kokuzo Bosatsu, the principal image at Horin-ji Temple in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, accompanied by their parents on the 13th day of the third lunar month (currently March to May). It is believed that Kokuzo bestows wisdom and good fortune. Thirteen types of sweets are sold on the temple grounds. This custom is said to have started in 1773 (An'ei 2). This custom can also be seen in other regions where Kokuzo is enshrined. Children who have just turned 13 years old travel from quite a distance to visit Kokuzo Bosatsu at Enzo-ji Temple in Yanaizu Town, Kawanuma County, Fukushima Prefecture, to pray for better luck and success in life. Originally, 13 years old was considered an unlucky age, and in some places, such as Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, people make the 13-year-old pilgrimage to ward off bad luck.
