Commendation - Shosei
Originally, in China, it referred to the situation where an empress dowager would rule in place of the emperor when he was still a child. In Japan, it refers to the situation where a new emperor or a member of the imperial family governs after the death of the previous emperor without an enthronement ceremony. After the death of Seinei, his sister took over, after Saimei's death Prince Nakano Oe (Emperor Tenchi), and after Tenmu's death, the empress (Empress Jito) took over.

元来は中国で天子が幼少のとき皇太后(こうたいごう)が代わって政治を行うことをさした。日本では先帝死去の後,即位式を行っていない新帝あるいは皇族が執政することをいい,清寧(せいねい)の死後に姉が,斉明の死後に中大兄皇子(なかのおおえのおうじ)(天智天皇)が,天武の死後に皇后(持統天皇)が称制した。
