Taishaku Gorge - Taishakukyo

Japanese: 帝釈峡 - たいしゃくきょう
Taishaku Gorge - Taishakukyo

The gorge of the Taishaku River flows along the border between Shobara City and Jinsekikogen Town in Jinseki County in northeastern Hiroshima Prefecture. The river has eroded the limestone plateau of the Kibi Plateau, and over a 20-kilometer stretch you can see cliffs over 100 meters high, natural bridges such as Onbashi and Menbashi, oddly shaped rocks, steep cliffs, and deep abysses. There are also limestone caves such as Hakuun Cave and Yakushi Cave. Almost in the center of the gorge is Lake Shinryu, a reservoir for the Taishaku River Dam built in the Taisho era, where there are sightseeing boats and a vacation village. The "Valley of the Taishaku River (Taishaku Gorge)" has been designated a national scenic spot, and is also part of the center of Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. In addition, many ruins from the Paleolithic, Jomon and Yayoi periods are distributed around the gorge, such as the Taishaku Kannondo Cave Ruins and the Taishaku Yosekura Rock Shed Ruins. There is a bus service from JR Hakubi Line Tojo Station and other stations.
