It is a type of bread oven-like steaming hut made mainly of adobe (sun-dried bricks), and comes from the Nahuatl word temazcalli. This custom overlapped with the habitations of Uto-Aztec peoples, and remains of temascals have been found in ruins from the Toltec culture onwards in the central Mexican highlands and south. They were used to soothe and restore newborns and pregnant women, to treat rheumatism, asthma, indigestion and other illnesses caused by the cold, and to treat bruises and injuries, as well as during religious ceremonies and festivals to purify impurities.
