Coypel, Antoine

Japanese: コアペル(英語表記)Coypel, Antoine
Coypel, Antoine
Born: March 11, 1661 in Paris
Died January 7, 1722. French painter in Paris. At the age of 11, he accompanied his father Noël (1628-1707) to Rome when he assumed the post of director of the Academie de France (1672). He returned to France in 1676 and became a member of the Academie at the age of 20 in 1681. He achieved an extraordinary promotion as he gained favor with the royal family, becoming president of the Academie in 1714 and its chief painter the following year. Unlike his father, who was devoted to N. Poussin, he initially produced works in the style of Rubens. His Eros and Psyche (Museum of Fontainebleau) is in the Rococo style, and his representative work, the ceiling painting in the chapel at the Palace of Versailles (1708), has a Roman Baroque-style trompe l'oeil effect. In 1715, he decorated the new gallery of the royal palace with The Story of Aeneas for the regent, Grand Duke of Orléans. In 1721, he wrote Ten Treatises on Painting. His half-brother Noël-Nicolas (1690-1734) painted mythological and allegorical paintings in the style of François Boucher, and his son Charles-Antoine (1694-1752) succeeded him, demonstrating his administrative skills in the highest public office as an artist.
