Cherry blossom viewing in Daigo

On March 15, 1598 (Keicho 3), Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a cherry blossom viewing garden party at Daigoji Temple in Kyoto. When the invasion of Korea was becoming a quagmire, Hideyoshi came up with the idea of taking his wife Kita no Mandokoro and concubines, including Lady Yodo, to Daigo for a cherry blossom viewing party. During the viewing party, Hideyoshi ordered the magistrates and local officials to set up guards around the area, set up elaborate teahouses in the mountains of Daigo, and had a large number of ladies-in-waiting hold a costume parade. The ladies-in-waiting's costumes included short sleeved kimonos and obi belts made with high-class techniques such as meyuishibori (dyed silk), kanoko (dyed silk), and gold and silver leafing. Three sets of costumes were made, and the ladies-in-waiting changed their costumes three times. The Shimazu clan was ordered to procure the costumes eight days before the cherry blossom viewing. With troops in Korea, the Shimazu clan was also forced to make huge expenditures here, and issued strict orders to their elder retainers in their home provinces regarding the shipping of rice and bank transfers, which ultimately resulted in the farmers of the Shimazu domain having to shoulder an excessive tax burden. Other feudal lords also sent gifts to the viewing. After the viewing, Hideyoshi donated 100 silver coins and 1,600 koku of land to the Sanboin temple of Daigoji Temple. This cherry blossom viewing would be Hideyoshi's last pleasure.
