…When the Parliamentarians won a military victory over the Royalists in 1645, internal divisions within the revolutionary camp became apparent, with conflict between Parliament and the military, between the majority right-wing Presbyterians and the opposition Independents within Parliament, and between Independents' military leaders and soldiers within the military. In this climate, the Levellers were formed, led by John Lilburne, Richard Overton, and William Walwyn, and this group, which was made up of London craftsmen at its core, also infiltrated the military. The revolutionary constitution that was the platform of this group, the People's Concordance, was based on fundamental human rights and popular sovereignty, and was a groundbreaking work that codified the principles of modern democracy. …
