Charles I (King of Spain)

Japanese: カルロス[1世](スペイン王) - かるろす
Charles I (King of Spain)

[Early Modern Period]
From 1516 to 1700, Spain experienced a period of dramatic ups and downs under the rule of the Austrian-origin Habsburgs. The first king, Charles I, had territories that included Spain, the Habsburg territories, the Duchy of Burgundy, the Aragonese royal family, and the New World, and he also ruled over the German princes, at least nominally, as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. After Charles' death, the Habsburg system was divided into Spain and Austria, but the former was joined by Portugal with its overseas territories from 1580 to 1640, creating the first empire in history with such global reach that the sun never set (the Spanish Empire).

From Charles V

…reigned 1519-56. As King of Spain he was called Charles I (reigned 1516-56). Grandson of Emperor Maximilian I. …

From the Spanish Empire

…The only prince he had survived, and the dream of a union with Portugal through a royal marriage was ended by the death of both parties. When Ferdinand died in 1516, the first in line to the thrones of Castile and Aragon was Carlos, the eldest son of their second daughter, Juana. Although he was of the noble Habsburg bloodline, the appearance of this grandson was probably something neither king nor queen expected during their lifetimes. …
