Hungarian photographer. His real name was Friedmann Andrei. He was born in Budapest. After defecting to Germany in 1931, he studied photojournalism in Berlin and worked at a photo agency. Because he was Jewish, he fled to Paris after the Nazi regime came to power. In 1936, he photographed the Spanish Civil War, and his photograph Death of a Popular Front Soldier was published in Life magazine, which made Capa famous. After that, as a freelance photojournalist, he photographed soldiers during the Sino-Japanese War and the Allied landings in Normandy. In 1947, he founded the photo agency Magnum Photos with Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour. After World War II, he produced a series of photographs of Picasso's daily life. When he came to Japan in 1954, the Indochina War broke out, and he was sent by Life magazine to the front line, but he was killed in an explosion when he stepped on a landmine while reporting. In recent years, Japanese non-fiction writer Sawaki Kotaro and others have revealed that a representative work depicting the Spanish Civil War was not made by Capa himself, but by his partner Gerda Taro (Gerda died in Spain in 1937), which has caused quite a stir. He also published an autobiography, A Little Out of Focus (1947).

ハンガリー出身の写真家。本名フリードマン・アンドレイFriedmann Andrei。ブダペスト生れ。1931年ドイツに亡命後，ベルリンでフォト・ジャーナリズムを学び，写真エージェンシーで働く。ユダヤ系であったためにナチ政権成立後はパリに逃れる。1936年，スペイン内乱を取材撮影し，《ライフ》誌に掲載された写真《人民戦線兵士の死》は，一躍キャパを有名にした。以降，フリーのフォト・ジャーナリストとして，日中戦争，連合軍のノルマンディー上陸作戦などを兵士と共に行動して撮影。1947年，カルティエ・ブレッソン，デビッド・シーモアらとともに写真通信社〈マグナム・フォトス〉を創設。第２次大戦後の仕事には，ピカソの日常生活を撮影したシリーズもある。1954年の来日時にインドシナ戦争が勃発し，《ライフ》誌の派遣で戦線に向かったが，取材中に地雷に触れて爆死。近年スペイン内乱を写した代表的な作品が，キャパ本人のものではなく，パートナーだったゲルダ・タローの作品（ゲルダは37年にスペインで死亡）であることが，日本のノンフィクション作家沢木耕太郎などにより明らかにされ，話題となった。自伝《ちょっとピンぼけ》（1947年）がある。
